Fake wine factory uncovered in Lagos

The police also arrested 48-year-old Anambra state indigene, Uju Daniel Ughanze, who served as the producer.

According to a report by Vanguard, the uncompleted building also served as a residential apartment to the suspect's family.

Lagos state commissioner of police, Imohimi Edgal, expressed shock and worry over the health implication of the fake wine when he visited the site.

He said samples of the product will be sent to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for laboratory analysis. Edgal also revealed that the building will be sealed until investigation is concluded.

He said, "Based on the information, I directed the Area Commander, Area P, Alagbado to mobilize to the scene, search and seal off the factory. 

"When the team arrived the scene, they executed a search warrant which enabled them to search and recover the following items: 4000 bottles of already produced, packed and labeled adulterated wine of different brands. 1000 empty bottles, drums of different sizes and various chemicals and reagents used as raw materials and other tools used in the production of fake wine/ beverages."

The police commissioner further revealed that the suspect, a secondary school dropout, has neither the requisite qualification nor license to embark on such a business.

Reacting to his arrest, the suspect disclosed that he has not started selling the product because he is yet to get NAFDAC approval.
