As one of the founders of the Endesa League, his influence was evident at every turn. He introduced the playoff system and the All-Star Game, and played a crucial role in shaping the format of the Copa del Rey, as well as in the professionalization of clubs.

Portela was also a co-founder and president of the ULEB organization. He is widely regarded as one of the key architects of the EuroLeague, and it's safe to say that without him, Europe's premier basketball competition might not exist. Portela will be remembered as the man who laid the foundations of modern European basketball and one of the most influential sports executives in the sport's history.
