Nadal, a 14-time grand-slam champion, had already signalled his intent to return to action for the World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, beginning on January 1.

And the Spaniard took to Facebook on Monday to post a picture of his preparations for the new campaign.

"Very happy to be training again and excited to prepare the next season," read the caption.

After the January's exhibition in Abu Dhabi, Nadal plans to compete in the ATP Tour event in Doha the following week ahead of the Australian Open.
