According to the statement from the NCEF, only the Federal Government has this right, adding that this proves that the current administration wants to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has responded to this by defending the Sultan, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), MURIC's Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said the Sultan did not declare a public holiday, rather he only announced a day for the 2016 Eid-el-Kabir.

"For the avoidance of doubts, there is a difference between declaration of Sallah day and declaration of a public holiday.

Only the Federal Government can declare a public holiday in the country while governors alone can declare it in their states.

But the Sultan reserves the right to declare the day for a Muslim festival.

The Sultan based the announcement on Saudi’s declaration of Sunday 11th September as Arafat Day. Normally, the following day should be Sallah day.

So the Sultan was right, he was even being proactive,’’ he said.

MURIC's director urged all faith groups to fight for peace, not problems in Nigeria.

"Let us join hands to rebuild our dear country. Let us come together to fight the ills of society.

Our criticisms and commendations should be on the basis of an individual’s pedigree and not on his religious leaning.

Let us celebrate our achievements together and seek corrections for our failings with one voice", he added.
