Dutch racing prodigy (15) makes history during Formula 1 weekend in Malaysia: 'This is truly unreal'
Fifteen-year-old Juste Mulder made Dutch motorsport history during the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend. The driver from Apeldoorn claimed victory in Sunday's Formula 4 race at the Sepang International Circuit, becoming the youngest Dutch driver ever to win an official support race during a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.
Maiden Formula 4 victory
It marked the crowning moment of a standout weekend for Mulder. After battling technical issues in the opening practice session, he set the fastest time of the field later on Friday. A day later, he secured pole position and finished second in race one, before clinching his maiden Formula 4 victory on Sunday.
'Unforgettable'
With the win, Mulder broke the record previously held by former Formula 2 driver Richard Verschoor, who was 21 days older when he claimed a Formula 4 win during the 2016 F1 weekend in Sochi. "This weekend has been completely surreal," said Mulder. "Racing at Sepang during a Formula 1 weekend was already special, but taking my first Formula 4 victory here makes it truly unforgettable."
'Brought to tears'
The triumph was an emotional milestone for his father, Gerard Mulder (pictured), as well. "You don't often see me cry, but when Juste crossed the finish line in first, I couldn't hold back the tears. Just a few months ago he contested his very first Formula 4 race, and now he's winning during an F1 weekend at just 15 years old. It's almost hard to fathom."
Career
Mulder started karting at just two and a half years old, going on to become a two-time Dutch champion, Benelux champion, and world vice-champion. In June, just ten days after turning 15, he made his debut in the Spanish Formula 4 Championship with Monlau Motorsport. He is managed by Pro Racing Motorsport, headed by former Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella and Marco Cioci. For the race weekend at Sepang, Mulder lined up for Evans GP.
