Elfyn Evans suffered a major blow to his World Rally Championship title hopes after picking up a puncture right at the start of Stage 16 at Rally Italia Sardegna, forcing him to stop and change the wheel. Although Evans and co-driver Scott Martin executed a rapid tyre change, the setback makes scoring points from the Super Sunday classification virtually impossible.
The Briton managed to retain fifth place in the overall standings, but his advantage over teammate Oliver Solberg was slashed even further. Evans missed out on two potential points for fourth place in the Sunday standings after shedding precious time on the penultimate test.
As a result, the title will be decided entirely on the rally-ending Power Stage. Holding a razor-thin one-point lead, Evans must finish ahead of Solberg on the final test, though his starting road position will make the task exceptionally difficult.
Solberg finished second fastest on the penultimate stage and leads Sebastien Ogier by 57.8 seconds in the overall classification, while also topping the Super Sunday standings.
