Ahead of the quarter-final matches, an average of 65,204 spectators attended each game, according to FIFA data. Thirty-two years ago, the average after the final was 68,991. This figure, according to DPA, will not be surpassed by the current tournament, even if all remaining matches sell out.
However, due to the participation of 48 teams and a significantly higher number of matches, the World Cup is comfortably breaking overall attendance records. Even before the final eight games, the 96 matches played so far had already attracted over 6.2 million spectators.
The Azteca Stadium in Mexico was a major draw, welcoming 404,120 fans. The previous maximum attendance came from the 24-team tournament in 1994, where over 3.5 million spectators attended 52 matches.
