Cruz, a Republican and close ally of US President Donald Trump, appeared on stage to hand the winner's trophy to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, only to be greeted by a wave of vocal discontent from the grandstands.

"The midterms are coming. People are already voting with their voices," remarked Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft amid the passionate crowd reaction.

The senator stepped onto the podium to take part in the trophy presentation for race winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli and top-three finishers Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

American voters will head to the polls on November 3 to elect new members of Congress—a vote that could have a substantial impact on the remainder of Trump's presidential term. Although Cruz himself is not running in the upcoming elections, the crowd made their feelings toward him abundantly clear.

Following the race, Cruz posted on social media that he had an "incredible day," adding: "All eyes of the racing world were on Texas. Congratulations to Kimi Antonelli on the huge win. It was an honor to present the winner's trophy."

The Formula 1 calendar includes races in Qatar on November 29 and Abu Dhabi on December 6, though uncertainty looms over how the 2026 season will conclude. Ongoing conflicts and regional tensions in the Middle East have raised questions, with speculation that the United States could escalate military operations against Iran after the midterm elections. Trump has already stated he will wait until after Election Day before initiating further strikes on Iran, and any escalation could directly disrupt the championship's schedule in the region.
