Despite a Championship Season, No New Deal. Arteta Addresses His Arsenal Future
Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years this May, and a new contract was widely anticipated following this historic achievement. However, an extension has yet to materialize. “They don’t need to worry about that at all, because I want to stay here. I am extremely happy. I am very grateful to be working with the people I work with, and when we have the opportunity, we will sort it out,” Arteta reassured fans. His last contract extension with the London club was in 2024.
He indicated that strengthening the squad took precedence over discussions about his own future during the summer. “There’s always another priority. That’s how we’ve approached it, because we all feel that the remaining time on the contract won’t be an issue. My will is certainly to stay, and I am very happy here. I get the same feeling from the club,” he was quoted as saying by AFP.
During the transfer window, Arsenal acquired midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle and forward Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. The London side also converted Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent transfer and signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a free agent. Conversely, Arteta was unsuccessful in his attempts to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid.
Despite significant investments from rivals, the 44-year-old manager is not concerned that Arsenal will lose their position as English champions. “I am very satisfied with the squad I have and with the club’s ambitions. There is no doubt about that. However, we must follow our own path. We have great strengths, but also areas where we must recognize that we don’t have the same opportunities or structure as some other clubs. We will do what we believe is right to give ourselves the best possible chance to compete in all competitions,” Arteta added.
