Derrick Rose is facing an indefinite period on the sidelines after the Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday that the point guard requires surgery for a medial meniscus tear of the right knee.
After reporting pain in his right knee earlier in the day, an exam and MRI confirmed the 2011 NBA MVP suffered the same injury that cut short his 2013-14 season.
A timeline for Rose's return will be determined once a date is set for the 26-year-old's surgery.
It is another blow for Rose, who has been hampered by knee injuries for the past three years.
Rose tore his left anterior cruciate ligament during the 2012-13 NBA play-offs before tearing the medial meniscus in his right knee, which ended his campaign the following season.
Rose had played in 46 games for the Bulls (36-21) this season, averaging 18.4 points and five assists.
