Tinubu was the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode, on Commerce and Industry before he died on Thursday, January 25 while playing a novelty football match in Epe, during the retreat of the Lagos State Executive Council.

In attendance at the funeral service was the wife of the Vice-President, Dolapo Osinbajo, Gov. Ambode, Ogun Governor, Ibikunle Amosun and members of the Lagos State Executive Council.

Tinubu started as a journalist before he became popular with his sports programme on Cool FM and Classic FM.

DT, as he was fondly called, was one of the founders of sports broadcast organisation, SportsVision, with his business partners Deji Omotoyinbo and Bode Oguntuyi.

Together with Omotoyibo and Oguntuyi,, Tinubu had a stint on TV, anchoring a sports programme called 90 Minutes that aired on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

He was very passionate about the grassroots development of sports and was a board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

He served as chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission under Babatunde Fashola before he was elected into executive committee of the NFF in 2010.

Under the Aminu Maigari-led NFF,  served as chairman of the marketing and sponsorship committee from 2010-2014.

He was appointed Lagos State Commissioner of Sports in 2015 by Ambode before a cabinet reshuffle that made him the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Ambode.

In his tribute, the Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN) Debo Oshundun, described the late sports administrator as an irreplaceable manager of the game.

“He is irreplaceable in our hearts. He is a man that gave it all for the sports he loves so much. He is a sport lover per excellence.

“He was always ready to assists whenever he was called upon and whenever we were to host our annual SWAN Week. He always supplied us water.

“The sports ministry under his watch grew to something phenomenal and the evidence is there for all to see, he is a man that had passion for sports.

“It is, however, unfortunate that he died doing what he loved doing best, he was passionate about football and he had demonstrated that all the time.’’

A staunch Nottingham Forest fan, Tinubu is the son of late Kafaru Tinubu, a police officer.

He is survived by an aged mother, Bintu Tinubu, his wife, Yemisi and two children and his younger brother, Wale who is the CEO of Oando Plc.
