De Zerbi's Debut Fails to Spark Change as Tottenham Hits New Low

Roberto De Zerbi's managerial debut for Tottenham ended in defeat as the London club fell 1-0 to Sunderland in a Premier League matchday 32 fixture. A deflected shot from Nordi Mukiele in the 61st minute, off Micky van de Ven, secured the lone goal at the Stadium of Light. This result plunges the "Spurs" into the relegation zone for the first time this season. They are now winless in 14 consecutive league matches, with nine losses, including seven in their last eight outings. Six rounds remain in the top-flight campaign.

Tottenham's defeat was not undeserved, as the team failed to impress despite showing some desire. De Zerbi opted for a 4-3-3 formation, leaving key players like Palhinha, Pape Sarr, and Xavi Simons on the bench. Young Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky started, having not featured since his disastrous Champions League performance against Atletico Madrid, where he was quickly substituted.

In the first half, the referee initially awarded a penalty to the capital club for a foul on Kolo Muani, but VAR intervention led to the decision being overturned.

Overall, Sunderland held the upper hand and, after several missed opportunities, capitalized on a fortunate deflection for their goal.

Just two minutes after the goal, a heavy collision occurred between Tottenham defender Cristian Romero and Kinsky. Sunderland's Brian Brobbey then unsportingly shoved the Argentine. Kinsky suffered a head injury requiring bandaging, while Romero was forced off with an injury. Brobbey, who had already been booked, escaped further punishment.

Even with 11 minutes of added time at the end, Tottenham couldn't find an equalizer. In the next round, the "Spurs" will host De Zerbi's former team, Brighton.

Sunderland sits comfortably in mid-table and will visit Aston Villa next week.
