The Spaniard was ranked 7th in a list compiled by a panel of experts in a poll for France Football magazine this week.

The panel was made up of former goalkeeping greats; Santiago Canizares, Lionel Letizi, Sepp Maier, Mark Schwarzer and Francesco Toldo.

The panel did not show as much love to De Gea as many fans of the Premier League may have expected. Fellow Premier League shot-stoppers, Hugo Lloris and Thibaut Courtois were ranked above him.

Manuel Neuer takes the podium

France Football used a scoring system identical to the Ballon d’Or award the magazine also runs. Unsurprisingly, Manuel Neuer of Germany and Bayern Munich ranked first; all five panellists put him at the top of their lists, earning him the maximum 30 points.

He was followed by veteran Gianluigi Buffon in second with 13 points.

Chelsea’s Belgian giant, Courtois came in third, with nine points.

Jan Oblak and Hugo Lloris tied in fourth place, with seven points each.

Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas was in sixth place with 5 points, one more than David De Gea who could only get a seventh-place ranking.

The list is rounded off by Barcelona’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Inter Milan’s Samir Handanovic.

Not too many De Gea fans

Former Italy and Inter Milan keeper, Francesco Toldo was the only panellist to put De Gea at his top three.

The Spaniard's heroics against Arsenal were not enough for Letizi, Maier and Schwarzer who did not name in their top fives at all.

De Gea watched from the touchline yesterday as Manchester United came from behind to win 2–1 at CSKA Moscow courtesy of goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.
