Who is Daisy Osakue?
But who is Daisy Osakue, an Italy athlete who bears an obvious Nigerian name?
From her page, Osakue was born in Turin in January 1996 to Nigerian parents and got her Italian citizenship in 2014 after she turned 18.
Her love for sports started at a very young age. As a child, she was very passionate about tennis but she gradually fell in love with Disc and Weight Throwing.
She obtained the cadet title in 2011 and competed in the 2015 European Junior Championships where she finished 19th.
She relocated to the United States in January 2017 to continue her studies at the Angelo State University in Texas.
Osakue represented Italy at the European teams of Lille where she finished sixth place and also at the U23 European Championships in 2017.
She is the current Italian record holder under the age of 23 with a record 59.72m which is also the fourth best performer ever among the Italian discus throwers.
The 22-year-old is due to compete at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin which kicks off in August but her preparation has taken a hit with the recent attacks.
“I don’t want to play the sexism or racism card, but people should be able to go out without someone attacking you out of the blue,” said Osakue, wearing a patch over her eye,” she told .
“They are just cowards.”
The attack on Osakue is the latest in the recent alarming rise in racist violence in Italy since the new populist government led the anti-establishment party Five Star Movement and far-right League took office in early June.
