Courtois Faces Unprecedented Shot Barrage in Record-Breaking Start to Season

Since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Thibaut Courtois has never faced such a barrage of shots across the opening eight matches of a campaign. The Belgian shot-stopper has been forced to deal with 37 shots on target, surpassing his previous unwanted record from 2020. Despite the unrelenting pressure, he continues to operate at an elite level, boasting a 76% save rate.

The workload on the Belgian goalkeeper has been immense. In his ninth campaign at the Santiago Bernabéu, Courtois is undergoing an unprecedented test, facing an average of 4.6 shots on target per game compared to his usual historical average of 3.6. That has translated into nine goals conceded, with only his sensational interventions preventing heavier damage for Los Blancos. While he continues to produce heroics between the posts, his workload is reaching alarming levels.

Previously, Real Madrid's worst defensive start over this opening stretch was recorded during the pandemic-disrupted 2020/21 season—Zinedine Zidane's final year, which included shock home defeats to Cádiz and Shakhtar Donetsk—when Courtois faced 35 shots on target. In Carlo Ancelotti's first season back, that tally hit 34 before the defense stabilized. Regarding goals conceded across the first eight games, the highest mark remains from the Belgian's debut 2018/19 season, when he conceded 12 times.

Following a relatively calm start to the season, where opponents managed no more than three shots on target in each of the first three fixtures, Madrid's backline began to fracture. Against Inter, Courtois made seven saves from eight attempts, delivering a world-class display. That was followed by another seven shots on target conceded against Rayo Vallecano, and a further seven-shot assault away against Atlético at the Metropolitano.

The underlying problem for the Spanish giants lies in systemic defensive frailties. The clash against Inter ranked 11th among the games with the highest number of shots faced by Courtois since 2018. The record for the most shots on target conceded in a single match during his Madrid tenure stands at 11—a feat recorded against Benfica, Pachuca, and Arsenal.

So far this term, Courtois has managed just a single clean sheet—in the home victory over Malaga. While his teammates departed for international duty, Thibaut stayed behind to train at Valdebebas, having temporarily stepped away from Belgium's national team.
