An Osun Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife on Wednesday remanded two illegal miners in prison for allegedly matcheting a farmer in the head and finger.

The defendants, Mohammed Abubakar, 26 and Usman Ibrahim, 18, whose addresses were not stated, are facing trial for alleged conspiracy and assault.

The Magistrate, Mr Olukunle Owolawi, however, did not take the pleas of the defendants.

Owolawi ordered that they should be remanded in Ile-Ife Prison.

He then adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Abdullahi, had told the court that the defendants committed the offence on May 7, 2019 at about 3:30p.m in Abiri Village near Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said that the defendants unlawfully conducted themselves in a manner that caused breach of peace.

According to him, they forcefully entered into the complainant, Olagunju Taiwo’s farmland and started mining gold without his consent.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendants also assaulted Taiwo by matcheting his head and right finger, when he accosted them about their mission in his farmland.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 249, 355 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
