Conor McGregor has taken another step towards his eventual return to the octagon after undergoing successful surgery to repair his damaged knee. The injury derailed his comeback fight at UFC 329.
On Wednesday, the former two-division UFC champion provided a brief update on his condition following the surgical intervention. While the full extent of the damage wasn't disclosed, McGregor has certainly suffered an ACL tear, which typically requires 9 to 12 months of recovery before he can compete again.
“The surgery went great!” McGregor posted on Instagram. “I’m confident!”
McGregor injured his knee with his very first strike against Max Holloway in their UFC 329 rematch. The Irish superstar initiated the fight with a spinning jump kick, leading to an awkward landing on his leg. Despite attempting to continue, McGregor's knee simply wouldn't allow it, leaving the referee no choice but to stop the bout just 66 seconds into the first round.
After a five-year absence due to a broken leg in his previous UFC bout, McGregor's return ended almost as quickly as it began. McGregor has undergone ACL surgery before, having sustained the same injury in his first fight against Holloway in 2013. He managed to continue that fight, ultimately winning by unanimous decision, before undergoing surgery to repair the injured knee.
This time, the injury is to the other leg, but McGregor is still facing a lengthy recovery period.
Nevertheless, McGregor has vowed to return within a year, already targeting International Fight Week in 2027 for his planned comeback date. McGregor has one fight remaining on his current UFC contract and has clearly stated his intention to fulfill that final bout before potentially exploring opportunities outside the octagon.
