Conor McGregor has announced he is scheduled for surgery. The news was shared by the fighter himself on his Instagram profile on Monday, August 3rd.
The revelation comes approximately three weeks after he sustained an ACL and meniscus injury to his right knee during his return to the octagon on July 11th in Las Vegas, at UFC 329.
In the Instagram video, McGregor is seen holding a Louis Vuitton bag while addressing the camera. "What's up, folks, it's the Mac," he says. "I'm going in for surgery today. So wish me luck."
In the caption accompanying the post, McGregor wrote: "Well, folks, here we go again! Surgery number 5 of my career! All things considered, that's an acceptable number! Let's get it done, WE WILL GET IT DONE!"
McGregor, 38, stated he expects to return to action no earlier than next summer and plans to fulfill his UFC contract, which has one fight remaining. UFC CEO Dana White also confirmed that McGregor would be sidelined for about a year. The former two-division champion suffered the injury when he opened his fight against Max Holloway with a jumping kick, landing awkwardly on his right leg. McGregor fell twice more, and when he clutched his knee in visible pain, the referee stopped the bout – just 69 seconds into the fight.
This marked McGregor's first fight in five years, and the disappointing end extended his string of setbacks in the octagon. He has lost four of his last five fights. In 2021, the Irishman broke his leg in the first round of his match against Dustin Poirier, an injury that led to his five-year absence.
