Colby Covington has filed a civil lawsuit against Jorge Masvidal, seeking over $50,000 in damages stemming from an alleged assault outside a Miami Beach restaurant in 2022. The lawsuit was filed in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on March 23.

According to court documents obtained by MMAFighting.com, Covington's attorneys detailed how he fought and defeated Masvidal in the UFC in 2022. However, following the bout, the former “BMF” champion stated in an interview: “If I see him in the street, I’m going to do everything in my power to break his f***ing jaw.”

On March 21, Covington was leaving the Papi Steak restaurant in Miami Beach when Masvidal allegedly ambushed him and “began a physical attack... without warning.” The lawsuit claims Masvidal struck Covington in the face, describing the assault as “sudden, willful, and calculated,” leaving the former interim UFC welterweight champion no chance to defend himself.

Masvidal subsequently faced criminal charges, later reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors where he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge. He was sentenced to time served and ordered to pay all court fees but received no additional jail time. Following the court hearing, Masvidal took to social media to launch new attacks on Covington regarding the incident.

“F*** you, Colby,” Masvidal declared. “It’s going to be a f***ing movie now. All those injunctions, all those restraining orders are lifted. It’s going to be a f***ing movie.”

Covington’s attorneys assert that Masvidal’s attack was “unprovoked,” “willful, malicious, and committed with the intent to cause harm.” As a result of the assault, Covington claims he “suffered bodily injury and the resulting pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, physical impairment, mental anguish, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life, expense of hospitalization, medical and nursing care and treatment.” Covington’s lawyers emphasize that the injuries “are either permanent or continuing” and the welterweight veteran “will suffer losses in the future.”

Covington is seeking “all allowable damages and any other legal or equitable relief” to which he “may be entitled.” In an accompanying document to the lawsuit, his attorneys noted that he is actually seeking damages totaling over $100,000. No court date has been set since the lawsuit was filed in March.
