American left-hander Young eased past 37-year-old wildcard Haas 6-3 6-4 at the Washington hard-court event.

Haas, the former world number two, battled a shoulder injury late in 2014 and early this year, having only made his return in June.

The 2012 runner-up has only won two main-draw matches in 2015, including at Wimbledon, as his return continues.

Haas' two wins almost matches that of Matosevic, who went down to Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6-3 6-3.

The Australian qualifier is a former world number 39, but his ranking has plummeted to 169 in the world after his struggles.

Matosevic has only three ATP World Tour main-draw wins this year, and the last of those came in Acapulco in February.

Qualifiers endured a difficult day at the ATP 500 tournament.

Yoshihito Nishioka went down to Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-1) 6-3, Darian King was thrashed by Go Soeda 6-2 6-1 and Ryan Harrison fell to James Duckworth 6-1 7-6 (7-4).

Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili battled past Benjamin Becker 4-6 6-1 6-3 and Ricardas Berankis was a 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 victor over Lu Yen-hsun.
