Carrick: It's all sorted – Lisandro Martinez is available, there's no drama in the squad
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that the situation surrounding Lisandro Martinez is now resolved, with the Argentine defender available for selection ahead of the derby against Leeds. Following the defeat to Atletico Madrid, the centre-back publicly criticised the club's hierarchy, specifically director of football Jason Wilcox. However, Martinez issued an apology yesterday, and the club has fined him, bringing an end to the disciplinary proceedings. Carrick insisted the episode has had no negative impact on the squad, highlighting their strong spirit and togetherness despite recent poor form.
"It is all done, really. We have moved on. It really hasn't been any drama for the squad. The team have trained really well and everyone is in good spirits. It was very straightforward. We understood the situation. Licha realised he made a mistake. The feeling around the club is very good. In terms of results, things haven't gone our way, but the spirit and togetherness is certainly there. You can see the group wants to turn things around. We've moved on. There's a freshness about the team, and Martinez is available.
"He put his statement out and realised he had made a mistake. That's enough to move on. From our point of view, owning up to what was done is enough to move forward. I understand the emotion. We demand passion, but there is a right way to express it. We have to channel that passion in the right manner," Carrick said.
The manager maintained that he retains the full backing of his squad, stressing that the collective desire to improve results is unrelated to external pressure or speculation regarding his own future.
"A lot of people talk and say all kinds of things. That doesn't mean you know what is really going on here. The players trust me completely. Just because people on the outside say things doesn't make it true. I'm telling you the truth. It's as simple as that.
"It's not about me. We all need results. It's bigger than just me. Believe me, I don't start my day thinking about myself. It's not about any individual player, either. It's all about the football club."
Carrick also spoke warmly about Daniel Farke's work at Leeds:
"I think Daniel has done a fantastic job since the start of last season. They have developed into a really good side. We know this is a massive fixture. The rivalry, the region—that's what makes these games so special. You have to embrace the history because that's what makes you feel connected to it. Elland Road brings real intensity. The atmosphere is fantastic, and on Sunday the fans will bring even more energy. We have to be ready for that."
