Spanish rally legend Carlos Sainz and his longtime co-driver Luis Moya took another step toward their competitive return to the stages. The duo completed a successful test session behind the wheel of a Ford Escort WRC run by Daniel Alonso's Past-Racing team in Bello, in the Asturian municipality of Aller.
The shakedown is part of their preparations for the upcoming historic Rally Asturias, where the 1990 and 1992 World Rally Champions will reunite in the cockpit. The choice of car carries strong sentimental value, as Sainz and Moya campaigned this very model during the 1997 World Rally Championship season.
Although they put the iconic Ford Escort through its paces during the test, it remains unconfirmed whether this will be their chosen machine for the event itself. According to information released following the test, the Spanish crew's final car selection is yet to be confirmed.
Alongside the rally, a special tribute celebrating the driver's illustrious career—"Homage to Carlos Sainz"—will also take place. Organisers emphasised that Sainz and Moya's presence will not be limited to mere demonstration runs, confirming they will contest a full competitive program in the rally.
