Can Red Bull Fight for Race Wins at Every Track?

The latest round of technical upgrades introduced in Baku paved the way for Max Verstappen and Red Bull to secure their first Formula 1 victory of the season at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Despite the breakthrough, team principal Laurent Mekies insists it is too early to guarantee front-running pace across every circuit.

After starting the campaign over a second adrift of the leaders, the Austrian outfit steadily closed the gap with a relentless development push. Their final upgrade package of the year, which debuted in Azerbaijan, put Verstappen in contention for victory at a traditionally tricky venue, finishing right behind race winner George Russell.

At the vastly different Sepang circuit in Malaysia, however, Verstappen was in a league of his own behind the wheel of the RB22. The Dutchman claimed a commanding pole position on Saturday before converting it into a dominant victory in a race disrupted by delays and changeable weather in Kuala Lumpur.

"We were surprised by the pecking order in Malaysia. On one hand, it confirms the positive trajectory we saw in Monza, Madrid, and Baku. We are finding extra pace with each race, which is fantastic. On the other hand, the extreme temperatures, the bumps, and the track layout might have pushed most cars out of their sweet spot. Did that affect the overall picture? It is entirely possible," Mekies noted. "We will aim to adapt as effectively as possible. We hope Singapore will suit our package thanks to our low-speed corner performance, but predicting what the competition will bring is extremely difficult. I believe we will be fighting for podiums in the upcoming rounds, as we've realistically been in that hunt for the past six, seven, or eight races. Whether we can fight for wins is another question. Mercedes are always in the mix, and we've seen how tough it is to match their consistency. McLaren and Ferrari have had their strong runs too. Our focus remains on extracting that little bit extra from our car, but whether that will be enough at every venue until the end of the season remains to be seen," Mekies concluded.
