Cadillac Continue to Battle Brake Overheating Woes

Cadillac's chronic brake issues hindered Valtteri Bottas once again at the Singapore Grand Prix. Nevertheless, the experienced Finnish driver expressed confidence that the flaw is "nearly overcome."

Brake overheating has plagued the MAC-26 throughout the season, causing four retirements and frequent sacrifices in race pace as drivers were forced to nurse the components.

The newest team on the grid introduced upgrades in Hungary and Azerbaijan. According to Bottas, the package brought to Baku lowered brake operating temperatures by 100 degrees Celsius. However, that proved insufficient for a trouble-free outing on the streets of Marina Bay, where careful management was once again vital.

"I had to start lift-and-coasting as early as Lap 2. Things eventually stabilized and I didn't need to do it for a while, but then the issue returned," Bottas explained. Asked whether the race served as a serious test for the updated brake elements, the Cadillac driver clarified: "Both of our cars saw the chequered flag. It required careful management, but I imagine almost every team had to make similar compromises at this track. I think the problem is nearly resolved. We should be fine for the rest of the campaign, and next year's design will be quite different."

However, having to manage the brakes does not fully account for Bottas's subdued performance in Singapore. The Finn was almost lapped by teammate Sergio Perez, crossing the line 96 seconds behind him — an average deficit of 1.6 seconds per lap.

"I had no pace in the first stint, losing maybe a second per lap. The picture stayed the same over the entire race distance. I was getting plenty of guidance from the engineers on where I could gain time and I tried everything. If I was slower on entry or mid-corner, I made adjustments, but then I'd lose out on corner exit or elsewhere. The car's handling was extremely poor today, so we'll have to analyze the data carefully," Bottas said. "We know another tough weekend lies ahead, although I'm hoping for a better result than this. It feels like we were far below our capabilities in Singapore and way off true race pace," the Finn concluded, looking ahead to next week's United States Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez, however, struck a far more positive note despite finishing 48 seconds behind Fernando Alonso.

"We showed great consistency with the pace we had today. From an operational standpoint, that is the most important thing right now, and the whole team did a fantastic job. We can be pleased. We are only missing between a second and a second and a half to be in the real fight. Throughout the first stint, we kept the Aston Martins behind us. We just need that extra second from the car to start battling with the rest," the Mexican driver stated.

Cadillac have six race weekends remaining this season to chase their first points and secure a historic top-ten finish in their debut Formula 1 campaign.
