Can’t singer help himself and just focus on his music?
At this rate, there are a number of things that are always a constant in this thing called life. You could throw in the taxes, death, sunshine, rainfall and a couple of other things and call them constants of life.
But have you ever considered adding a ‘Burna Boy controversy’ to that list?
In the Nigerian entertainment space, Burna Boy is a trouble magnet. When he doesn’t attract it, he seeks after it, chases it, brings it on, and harries everyone else until he achieves it. It’s like his superpower, the ability to attract trouble on a consistent level.
We all thought this trait was done and over with. Burna Boy has been one hell of a focused singer in recent months. He gained access to the UK after many years of being shut out, and embarked on a winning tour and collaboration streak that just about gave him the feeling of finding a new lease of life in his career.
A new EP, “Redemption”, was released, and it housed the popular song ‘Pree me’. Reviews had stayed on the fence about the quality of the project, with many critics choosing to embrace the significance of the project, rather than the actual quality of the music.
But trust Burna Boy to provide something else that takes the conversation away from his music, and into the gossip section. The singer just can’t help himself, and he has struck again. And this time, it’s Chocolate City’s DJ Lambo.
Burna Boy stirred into controversy once more at a gig which occurred over the weekend.
The dancehall singer took shots at DJ Lambo who happened to be the DJ performing at that time, with DJ Neptune also present at the event.
He went on to express his feeling towards Lambo saying "I don't know what the f*ck the DJ is doing, if you know say you no sabi play, just off am, we go do church here". And then Burna begins clapping, with the audience following suit.
You can watch the video below.
The reaction for this has not been overwhelming, because we have the US Elections and partly because we are already immune to all his antics. Nigerians have collectively gone past the stage of being stimulated by a new Burna Boy controversy. Disrespecting DJ Lambo looks too thin when it is juxtaposed with some of his worst indiscretions. This guy had threatened to kill bloggers, attacked a lady who claimed to be with his child, and literally done everything else. DJ Lambo’s episode pales in comparison with the others.
The conversations around this might not be as deafening as the others but it does put the singer among the headlines, and takes the focus away from his music.
This isn’t what Burna needs right now. Not another controversy to rock his celebrity and demystify him some more. There’s just so much musically that he can generate and focus his energy on, and a new controversy has no place in his life.
