Bryan Mbeumo offers ray of hope for Michael Carrick as Manchester United crisis deepens

Manchester United extended their winless run to six matches after being held to a 1-1 draw away at Leeds United. In a season where Red Devils supporters are desperately searching for reasons for optimism, Bryan Mbeumo once again found the net at Elland Road.

For the Cameroon forward, it marked his fourth goal in seven Premier League appearances. Aside from captain Bruno Fernandes, who struck a hat-trick against Ipswich in August, no other player in Michael Carrick's squad has managed more than a single goal this campaign.

Although United looked relatively composed in the draw at Leeds—echoing their display against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday after conceding early—the points return remains meager. This six-match winless streak is the club's worst since the 2018/19 season, when results nosedived following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent appointment.

"Just because they didn't lose to Leeds, we now think United did well. That in itself is a negative because we are lowering the bar and dropping standards. We shouldn't be talking about a club of this stature like that," former England international Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.

Following last season's clash between the two rivals, former manager Ruben Amorim delivered a post-match press conference that led to his dismissal within 24 hours. This time, the pre-match drama was sparked by Lisandro Martinez, who openly criticised sporting director Jason Wilcox and the club's board over an unconvincing summer transfer window.

Although Martinez started after issuing an apology, he was forced off at half-time with a thigh problem. With no natural cover at left-back for the injured Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot became the fifth different player to start in that role this season.

Following the latest round of fixtures, Manchester United languish in an uncomfortable 13th place in the table. Next up is a Champions League trip to Italian side Como, with Shaw's availability still shrouded in doubt.

Mbeumo's display against Leeds was not entirely flawless—he spurned a glorious headed chance before breaking the deadlock and was unable to stop Dominic Calvert-Lewin from nodding in the equaliser early in the second half. Nonetheless, the former Brentford forward's contributions remain invaluable against the backdrop of misfiring frontline peers and an injury to striker Benjamin Sesko.

Mbeumo's versatility has proved vital for the coaching staff. Having started the campaign on the right flank in the absence of Amad Diallo, he was subsequently shifted to lead the line as a central striker, before operating from the left wing at Elland Road.

"When you have the quality to perform across multiple roles, managers will naturally ask different things of you," former Red Devils striker Dion Dublin told BBC Sport. "Given Manchester United's current situation, you simply have to slot in wherever you can help the team most."

"Bryan brings so much to the side and makes huge sacrifices," Dublin added. "He's ready to do whatever it takes for the team—whether that means tracking back defensively in key zones or driving forward in attack. He gives everything. He gets into fantastic positions that create real danger, and they are lucky to have a player like him."
