The duo intervened to assist security guard Israel Ilesanmi, who was subjected to racist abuse by Wheeler. Wheeler himself admitted to consuming "around seven cans" of beer on the night of the incident.

Wheeler, a pharmaceutical delivery driver, stated he mistook Ilesanmi for a lookout for a criminal group. Court testimonies revealed Wheeler called the Nigerian man a "prick" and questioned him, saying, "You're not English. Why are you here? What are you looking for?"

Janelt and Schade witnessed the altercation and attempted to intervene, at which point Wheeler reportedly told them to "get lost, you f***ing German arseholes." The situation quickly escalated, leading to the two players assaulting the inebriated Wheeler, who then called 999 to report the attack.

A London court found the Englishman guilty. He was fined one month's salary of £1699 and ordered to pay £150 in compensation to Ilesanmi, as per BTA.
