Bizarre double blow for Arsenal ahead of Champions League as players injured in post-match training

Arsenal will be without Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie and Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi for Tuesday's Champions League clash against OSC Lille. Both suffered freak ankle injuries following the weekend's 2-1 Premier League win over Leeds.

Hincapie, who came off the bench in Saturday's match, suffered an unfortunate injury during post-match training. Zubimendi picked up a similar knock during the warm-down. "We had a training session scheduled after the match for players who had less game time. Through two very unfortunate situations, we lost two players, which is not good," Gunners manager Mikel Arteta confirmed on Monday.

It remains unclear how long Hincapie and Zubimendi will be sidelined. "We need to assess their condition. They are undergoing further scans today to determine the extent of the damage, and then we will establish a timeframe for their absence," the Spanish coach told AFP.

Last season's Champions League finalists kicked off their European campaign with a 1-0 victory away at Napoli. In the Premier League table, the reigning champions sit second, three points behind leaders Manchester City.
