Following José Mourinho's presentation on Tuesday, Real Madrid officially announced their first signing for the new season on Wednesday: Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese international was unveiled early this afternoon, just three days before the Blancos' LaLiga debut, scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 PM against Espanyol.
The acquisition of the 32-year-old midfielder, who arrived on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expired, was a direct request from Mourinho. The Madrid club fulfilled the coach's wishes, fending off competition from other interested parties, including Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, to secure the player's services.
The transfer had been officially confirmed by the club on July 17th. More than a month later, the Portuguese midfielder formally signed a two-season contract, tying him to the Madrid giants until June 2028, with an option for a further year, in the presence of president Florentino Pérez.
The presentation took place behind closed doors, without the presence of fans or media, in a format very similar to the Portuguese coach's ceremony the previous day. Bernardo Silva's ability to create play, score goals, and his defensive commitment are expected to be key strengths for the team.
After the event, the player spoke to the club's media and expressed his awe at the grandeur of his new club.
"When you're in this room, you realize how big Madrid is. I already knew it, but here you feel it personally," he stated, adding: "Since childhood, your dream is to play for a club like Real Madrid. Being able to follow this victorious path is very beautiful for me, so I'm very happy."
The former Benfica player confessed his admiration for the trophy room. "I've played here many times; seeing the 15 Champions League trophies they display is imposing, but seeing them here is even more special. Playing for a club like this isn't for everyone," he emphasized.
Finally, Bernardo Silva left a message for the fans: "I'm very happy to be here and, soon, to play at the Bernabéu and meet the fans. Now it's time to work to keep winning titles, which is what this club is used to."
