Big-hitting Berdych awaits in a rematch of their clash from last year, when the Czech claimed victory in a tight four-setter.
Tomic, 21, said it was crucial to put pressure on Berdych by making a good start and forcing him to play catch-up.
"That sort of player, if he's sort of beating you from the start and he's up one or two sets, it's difficult to come back because he's a great player and he's a good frontrunner," he said.
"So I need to win the first set and put pressure on him. Then everything can change.
