Bellingham: In the past, we would have crumbled under such pressure, but today we stood firm
Jude Bellingham emerged as England's undisputed hero in an epic clash against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. The young midfielder delivered a phenomenal performance, not only scoring two goals in the dramatic 3-2 triumph but also making a crucial goal-line clearance to save the Three Lions at a moment when the team had to defend their lead with 10 men on the field. After the match, he praised his teammates, stating that in the past, the team would hardly have withstood such pressure as they did today.
"It's hard to take it all in right now. To defend in our box with 10 men the way we did, and to be so clinical in theirs – it's incredible. In past years, watching as a fan and as a kid, under such immense pressure, England probably would have crumbled. Today, however, we stuck together until the very last second. Both the starters and the substitutes gave absolutely everything and pushed themselves to the limit. That's what this team is all about," Bellingham stated.
The midfielder expressed immense admiration for the fans and did not overlook the referee's decisions and the importance of his own interventions.
"The atmosphere was the best I've ever played in at an international level. Mexico is a magnificent footballing nation. Regarding the referees – what's done is done. It's a World Cup, they're human too. My clearance in the first half at 2-1 was as important as the goals, but this victory is for the whole country and for our fans who paid their hard-earned money to come to Mexico," the midfielder added.
Finally, England's star turned his attention to the upcoming quarter-final against Norway.
"We're taking it game by game. The Norwegians pose a different threat and have world-class players we know very well, so we need to be fully prepared. But, for goodness sake, if you can't enjoy a night like this, even for just a few hours, then what's the point of it all?" the Englishman concluded.
