‘Immigration officer suspended after being caught on camera begging for money’
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II, following allegations of bribery.
Ufuoma was captured in a viral video allegedly soliciting money from a traveller, a conduct that has sparked widespread outrage.
The video, widely circulated on social media with the caption "This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria," prompted immediate action from the NIS.
Kenneth Udo, the NIS spokesman, emphasised that the officer's behaviour is entirely inconsistent with the service's values of professionalism and integrity.
"The conduct displayed by the officer is a stark deviation from the ethical standards we maintain. We are committed to addressing such misconduct decisively," Udo said.
Comptroller General of Immigration Kemi Nandap condemned the incident, stressing that it undermines ongoing efforts to improve service delivery within the NIS.
She assured the public that Ufuoma has been indefinitely suspended pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
"The officer's actions are disgraceful and do not reflect the commitment of the NIS to hospitality, reception, and courtesy. We are determined to ensure that our standards are upheld at all times," Nandap stated.
The NIS's swift response to the incident underscores its unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption and maintaining public trust, thereby upholding its ethical standards.
