Baldwin Shares How His Father Influenced Him! Reveals to Sportal: "When He Pulls Out Two Tapes, One is From Croatia..." /VIDEO/
Baldwin remains an enigma for many Crvena Zvezda fans. The player, boasting NBA experience, arrived somewhat under the radar, an unusual profile for his position. Standing at 213 centimeters, he covers wing positions. Despite this, he maintains a positive outlook since his arrival in Belgrade. He's gradually adapting to the new rules and appears ready for his EuroLeague debut.
"It takes a little time to get used to the new rules. You know, everything is different with steps, picking up the ball, fouls... It's a bunch of things that take a few practices to get accustomed to, and then you're ready. But at the end of the day, it's basketball, and at the highest level." - Patrick Baldwin
He then revealed what was most challenging to adjust to.
"Honestly, probably the three-second rule in the paint on defense. Here, you can really stand down there and hold that low post position for quite a while, whereas in the NBA, if you're in the paint for two and a half seconds, you already feel like three seconds have passed." - Patrick Baldwin
The court is shorter, requiring a different approach to utilizing space.
"I think whenever you have a shorter court, it just forces you to be more tactically mature by nature. You have less space, and taller, bigger players occupy that small space, so it's definitely a different game." - Patrick Baldwin
Despite his 213-centimeter height, Baldwin possesses an exceptional three-point shot, yet he doesn't solely rely on it.
"Of course, but shooting isn't something you can always rely on 100 percent. You have to bring other things to the game, and I think those things are most important for me – bringing intensity, defense, rebounding, and the shots will come naturally." - Patrick Baldwin
Playing in the Balkans at the turn of the 21st century wasn't easy, and his father shared stories about it.
"He told me about fans throwing things onto the court, the intensity of those games, and honestly, the talent he played with and against at that time. So, a couple of times he dusted off old tapes and showed me some games. He really prepared me well, even long before this, to play at this level." - Patrick Baldwin
Whenever his father needs to remind his son of his past achievements, two specific tapes always come out.
"He has two tapes he loves to show me: his tape from Croatia and a college game against Minnesota where he scored about 27 points and had some dunks. He always wanted to remind me that he was a good athlete in his day. I always knew that, but he loves that video." - Patrick Baldwin
His father had a truly immense influence on him, so much so that he still acts as his strength and conditioning coach and nutritionist.
"A really big influence. He put a ball in my hands practically from birth. He was not only my father but also my coach, my strength and conditioning coach, my nutritionist... He was everything to me up until this point." - Patrick Baldwin
There was no other option besides basketball.
"One hundred percent, yes, one hundred percent. There was no Plan B, no other option... For him, it was just basketball. But he made sure I was versatile, and I had other opportunities, but I love basketball, and that's what I ultimately pursued." - Patrick Baldwin
Finally, he spoke about his goals for the upcoming season in a unique way.
"I think setting goals is very difficult when you're in a new environment. I think it all comes down to being consistent every day, sticking to your habits, and detaching yourself from the ultimate outcome. As long as I show up to practice, stay true to my habits and professionalism, I think success will come on its own." - Patrick Baldwin
