Team Kenya overcame the chaos that marred the opening day of the
Athletes from Kenya were among the almost 300 from different countries that were stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after failing to get connecting flights to Asaba.
They made it to the host city in the last minute on opening day and also had to deal with accommodation issues.
Despite the challenges, Team Kenya are the official winners of the 2018 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships after finishing with a total of 19 medals.
Kenya have 100 gold, six silver and two bronze medals to finish number one on the medals table.
They are followed by South Africa who have 30 medals in total but only came second due to less number of gold medals to Kenya.
Team South Africa head home with nine gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals followed by host Nigeria who finished the championship with a total of 19 medals-nine gold, six silver and five bronze medals.
Morocco are fourth-two gold, five silver and four bronze medals-while Ethiopia complete the top five with two gold, three silver and four bronze medals to make a total of nine.
Kenyan Government were left disappointed with the ordeal their athletes face when they arrived in Nigeria for the game.
They threatened to pull their athletes from the game before a late intervention solved their logistics problem.
After their win at the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships, Kenya’s vice-president William Samoei Ruto took to Twitter to congratulate the athletes.
“With 19 medals: 11gold, six silver and two bronze, Kenya confirms its unrivalled position as a powerhouse of sports and a breeding ground of talent. We salute Team Kenya for an energetic, passionate showing at African Senior Athletics Championships. You are all winners,” Ruto said.
