Russian tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva, at just 19 years old, cemented her status as a future star of the sport this Saturday, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. The current world number eight, who will ascend to sixth in the rankings, becomes the youngest champion in Paris since Monica Seles in 1992.
In the final, Andreeva delivered a commanding performance against Poland's Maja Chwalinska, the tournament's biggest surprise package. The Russian completely dominated the match, defeating the WTA's 114th-ranked player 6-3, 6-2 in a largely one-sided affair where she won 10 of the last 12 games.
As Andreeva celebrated her victory, some fans unfurled a Russian flag in celebration, but a security guard swiftly intervened, ensuring it was quickly put away.
This Roland Garros triumph caps off a highly successful season for the Russian tennis player, who has already secured two WTA 500 titles in Adelaide and Linz, in addition to reaching the final of the WTA 1000 in Madrid. With this victory, Andreeva also takes the lead in the WTA Race, the qualification standings for the Finals.
