Wiggins was picked by the Cavaliers on Thursday following a superb collegiate season with Kansas, in which he set freshman records in multiple areas including scoring average (17.1 points per game) and total points (597).

It was the third time in four years that the Cavaliers have had ownership of the number one pick, with Wiggins following Kyrie Irving and Canadian compatriot Anthony Bennett to the Quicken Loans Arena.

No major Cleveland sports franchise has won a national title since the Cleveland Browns won the NFL crown in 1964.

And small forward Wiggins, 19, is eager to help the Cavaliers - who have never won an NBA championship - end that drought.

"I always wanted to be in the NBA, but I never really thought about being the number one pick until high school," Wiggins told the Cavaliers' official website.

"So once it happened, it"s like a dream come true and more.

"My father really put that in my head that defense is one of the key things in basketball.

"You can't be a great player without playing both ends of the floor. And that's what I do " I really focus in, and my athletic ability helps me.

"I know some of Cleveland"s sports history. I know they haven't had a championship in a very long time " I think since the '60s.

"So I just want to build and bring something to the town, bring a championship, do something that hasn't been done in a while."
