Alex Marquez believes his older brother Marc will need to pull out all the stops at three specific circuits during the final five rounds of the MotoGP season.
Following the Indonesian Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion sits just two points adrift of championship leader Jorge Martin. The Mandalika circuit once again posed a major challenge for Marquez and his Ducati, but he took victory in the sprint race before limiting the damage with a sixth-place finish in Sunday's main event. Meanwhile, Martin crossed the line in fourth and third respectively, leaving both title contenders tied on 22 points across the weekend.
Five rounds remain this season, with Portimao being the only track on the calendar where Marc is yet to register a victory. In contrast, venues such as Phillip Island, Sepang, Lusail, and Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo have historically been very successful for the Spaniard. Alex Marquez stressed that his brother survived a demanding test in Indonesia, but warned that Aprilia could prove extremely strong in Australia, Qatar, and Portugal.
“He saved himself, without a doubt. I wouldn't call it a win, but Marc came away unscathed from what has been a treacherous track for him,” the Gresini rider said. “It ended in a draw—22 points each for him and Jorge. The championship fight remains wide open, even with tracks like Australia, Qatar, and Portimao ahead, where Aprilia could perform brilliantly.”
In the wake of the Indonesian GP, the topic of potential team orders within the Aprilia garage has also come to the fore. The team boasts two riders in the top three of the standings, although Marco Bezzecchi trails championship leader Martin by 46 points with five rounds remaining.
The Italian outfit acknowledge they have the resources to support Martin through his stablemates, but are currently holding off on implementing team orders. Alex Marquez reckons Ducati could also consider a similar strategy later in the campaign, even if that moment has not yet arrived.
“It's clear that Aprilia know exactly what they want. Their goal is the championship, and they are already speaking with all their riders,” the younger Marquez added.
