Alex Albon will remain with the Williams Formula 1 team for a sixth consecutive season in 2027, having agreed to a short-term contract extension.
Albon joined Williams ahead of the 2022 season and was one of several drivers whose contracts were set to expire at the end of this year. This fueled speculation about his future, as well as that of his teammate Carlos Sainz, within the underperforming team.
However, the 30-year-old driver has now committed his future to the Grove-based outfit, signing a one-year contract extension for 2027. With this move, he demonstrates his belief that the team will continue its long-term restructuring into a modern Formula 1 operation.
According to some reports, the original contract between Williams and Albon was valid until the end of 2027, but only now have the early termination clauses been removed, and both parties have activated the final 12 months of the agreement.
Team Principal James Vowles stated he was “delighted” that the Anglo-Thai driver continues to believe in Williams despite a challenging 2026 season, which saw the team drop to ninth in the standings after climbing to fifth last year.
“Alex has been a leader in this transformation project from day one, and we have a lot of unfinished business that we are determined to achieve,” Vowles said. “Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the huge improvements we have made in recent years – re-signing him shows the belief we both have in the direction we are heading.”
Earlier this year, Albon became Williams' longest-serving driver, surpassing Nigel Mansell in Spain, before hitting the 100-race mark for the legendary team during the recent Hungarian Grand Prix. His teammate, Sainz, has yet to announce his future with the squad.
