'The thing around your neck' by Fatimah
Be not only a piece of cloth
But a second skin
Please be a reminder
Of purpose
Of love and protection and hope
Caution me, when my temper is about to flare
Be a muzzle, when my tongue is about to slip
Hold me, when I’m near acting out
Cover me; head to toe.
In and out
Body and soul
Draw me, closer to He who’s always loved me
Shield me, from myself, most importantly.
You’re neither a smoke screen
Nor a cushion
Nor a camouflage
You do not serve the purpose
Of (in)validating or protecting lecherous humans – because you can’t.
You’re my closest friend
And we really don’t give a hoot about anyone
Who refuses to look away as they should.
