Abandoned La Liga fixture to be completed behind closed doors

The La Liga Round 8 clash between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao will be completed behind closed doors, with the possibility of the match being moved to an alternative venue. The encounter at Vallecas, originally scheduled for last Saturday (October 10), was abandoned after objects were repeatedly hurled onto the pitch. A confirmed date and stadium for the rescheduled conclusion are yet to be announced.

Play was halted in the 24th minute at 0-0 after sections of the home support showered the pitch with paper planes, small plastic balls, and bottles, predominantly launched from the stand situated directly above the tunnel. The demonstration was an expression of protest against the club's board and president.

Although no players or match officials were struck, the referee was forced to suspend proceedings twice within a 10-minute span. Following the second stoppage, both teams retreated to the dressing rooms. However, just 16 seconds after play resumed, further projectiles rained down onto the pitch. With the National Police stating that the safety of participants could no longer be guaranteed, the match was officially abandoned.

The official ruling states that the remainder of the fixture must be played behind closed doors to avoid further unrest and ensure a safe conclusion. Exactly 20 minutes and 44 seconds remain in the first half—to which at least ten minutes of stoppage time will be added—followed by the entire second half.

The match will resume from the exact moment it was stopped—at 0-0 with a throw-in awarded to Rayo Vallecano. La Liga officials will confirm the date, kick-off time, and stadium for the remainder of the game in coordination with the National Police.

The disciplinary committee emphasised that staging the match without spectators does not constitute a new sanction, but rather a purely preventative measure to ensure safety during the rescheduled play.

The ruling also specifies that Rayo Vallecano, as the host club responsible for matchday security, must cover all travel and accommodation expenses for Athletic Bilbao's return trip. Unless both clubs reach an alternative agreement, the Basque side will submit their invoices to the competition judge for approval prior to reimbursement.

Regarding squad eligibility, all players registered with either club as of October 10 will be available for selection, regardless of whether they featured in the opening minutes. However, any players who had already been substituted or those facing disciplinary suspensions following the incidents will not be permitted to take part.
