A Story You Couldn't Make Up: Iconic 2007 Photo of Messi with Yamal Breaks the Internet
It was 2007, and the then 20-year-old Argentine was already considered one of the best young players in the world. The Spaniard was just a baby. Both posed for a charity photoshoot for FC Barcelona and UNICEF. In one photograph, Messi is seen helping Yamal's mother bathe the 6-month-old future football star in a small blue plastic tub.
"Photographer Joan Monfort said that Yamal stole Messi's heart because he kept smiling," stated Laia Ruichová from UNICEF's Catalan branch.
Yamal's family participated in and won a raffle, earning them the chance to pose with a Barcelona player for the 2008 UNICEF calendar – their photo was assigned to January. Fifty percent of the sales went to fund projects supporting children's rights and addressing their basic needs.
Messi has been a UNICEF supporter since 2004, becoming a Goodwill Ambassador six years later. Immediately after his appointment, he traveled to Haiti to raise public awareness of the plight of children in the country following the devastating earthquake.
This year, Yamal joined him as the newest Goodwill Ambassador, using his platform to advocate for every child's right to play. "Growing up, all I had was my family, a ball, a park, and a dream. Playing football gave me structure, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future.
I know how important it is for children to have a safe place to play, to simply enjoy being kids, exploring the world, growing, and developing their imagination," the 19-year-old Spanish superstar stated before the World Cup.
This Sunday, July 19th, football fans worldwide will witness a remarkable moment as Yamal and Messi meet again to lead their teams in the title match.
Such moments remind us that stories connecting people can inspire action. While fans will enjoy the final two clashes of the World Cup, UNICEF envisions a brighter future where every child has the opportunity to grow, play, and reach their full potential.
