Taiwo Awoniyi scored Nigeria’s first goal in the 8th minute. The striker beat an onrushing keeper S. Sy, who misjudged the flight of the ball, to sweep  home the ball for the opening goal.

The striker was on song again three minutes later with a similar strike.

He shrugged off the challenge of Senegal’s keeper and a defender to score a composed goal.

Senegal reduced the deficit as Sidy Sarr with the number eight shirt capitalised on uncertainty in the Flying Eagles defending to score a left-footed effort in the 26th minute.
