11 Roles That Prove Sterling K. Brown Is So Much More Than the This Is Us Guy
This Is Us (2016 - ) Riding the momentum from American Crime Story, Brown almost immediately stepping into what's become his career-defining role, as Randall Pearson on This Is Us. The interlocking, twisty, time-jumping family drama has been one of the biggest shows on TV for now four seasons, and Brown's performance has been good enough to earn him a Golden Globe and an Emmy (along with two more Emmy nominations). Black Panther (2018) Brown has a small role in Black Panther, and he doesn't even play a superhero. But he makes the most of his limited screen time, as his character is pivotal to the movie's plot, and he turns out to be the father of [Spoiler if you somehow haven't seen Black Panther yet!] Michael B. Hotel Artemis (2018) Brown stars alongside Jodie Foster, Jeff Goldblum, Charlie Day, and a few notable others in this fun thriller that we must say runs dangerously close to the John Wick premise; Where John Wick focuses on a hotel for assassins, Hotel Artemis focuses on a hospital for criminals. The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience (2019) Bet you either didn't know or forgot about this one! Brown made an absolutely amazing cameo in The Lonely Island's super random and super fun project that debuted on Netflix earlier this year; his short cameo as 'Sia' during the 'Oakland Nights' segment was iconic. Supernatural (2006-2007) Long before This Is Us or American Crime Story, Brown had a solid four-episode run on Supernatural where he played a rival vampire hunter to main duo Sam and Dean Winchester. Marshall (2017) Brown's character, Joseph Spell, was at the center of the plot of this 2017 biopic that starred Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first black United State Supreme Court Justice. Insecure (2017) After American Crime Story and This Is Us had already hit, Brown made an uncredited pair of appearances in the very funny HBO comedy Insecure. Person of Interest (2012-2013) Brown had a recurring six-episode run in Person of Interest, the J.J. Abrams-produced CBS drama. Army Wives (2007-2013) The show might be called Army Wives, but there's at least one Army Husband in the mix; this Lifetime original series aired for seven seasons, and Brown appeared in 108 of the show's 117 episodes. The Predator (2018) Brown was part of a very impressive ensemble cast for Shane Black's 2018 reboot of the Predator franchise, appearing alongside Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Keegan Michael-Key, and Trevante Rhodes; in addition to his on-screen exploits, he was also the the only member of the movie's cast to publicly apologize to Munn after the film became mired in controversy surrounding a sex offender who was involved with the production of the film. Waves (2019) Waves hasn't even been released yet (you'll have to wait until November 15th), but based on it's Frank Ocean-scored trailer and early reviews from the festival circuit, it feels like this could actually be Brown's first real shot at an Oscar nomination.
