Reactions as Kylian Mbappe breaks Lionel Messi's record in PSG's 2-1 win against Juventus
Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) recorded a 2-1 victory against Juventus to start the Champions League campaign on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
The French Ligue 1 champions started fast, Mbappe scored from a ball through to him by Neymar as early as the fifth minute.
Achraf Hakimi provided Mbappe with his second goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
PSG went to the halftime break with a two-goal cushion but at the start of the second period, American midfielder Weston McKennie pulled one back for Juventus from a ball by Filip Kostic.
PSG would hold to get a crucial three points and start their campaign with a victory against the Serie A giants.
Mbappe breaks Messi's record
While Cristiano Ronaldo did not score in his first 20 Champions League games, his rival Lionel Messi had a fast start.
At the age of 23 years 308 days old, Messi had 35 goals in the competition. That has been a Champions League record for the last 11 years until a brace by Mbappe against Juventus.
Mbappe at 23 years, 260 days old now holds the record as the youngest player to score 35 goals in the Champions League.
Mbappe and Haaland
Mbappe was given the Man of the Match award after his two-goal showing for PSG against Juventus.
Manchester City forward Erling Haaland also scored twice in a 4-0 win against Sevilla.
Just as the debate between Ronaldo and Messi lasted for decades, there were comparisons between Haaland and Mbappe on social media.
Mbappe and Haaland are two youngsters with incredible goal conversion rates and fans believe they can emulate the greatness of Ronaldo and Messi.
