Oby Ezekwesili, Gbenga Sesan, others discuss social media ethics

The one-time-Minister of Education enthused that social media ethics would be better with time.

As elections draw near, the Nigerian social media space is being inundated by the minute with political opinions which tends to be followed with vile and hate messages.

At a session during the Social Media Week Lagos 2015, former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, social commentator Gbenga Sesan talked about the pros and cons of social media in reporting complex issues to a connected but distracted audience.

Speaking on the type of conversations that have dominated Twitter during this election period, Oby Ezekwesilii opined that the discussions on social media platform are a welcomed development in Nigerian democracy.

She however revealed that the Nigerian society is new to these discussions and ethics can only be learnt with time and constants practice.

“We are a society that only began to learn how to have discussions and understand that voice is a powerful weapon, so there is a level of maturity that surrounds the conversation,” the former minister said.

She added that the comments and anger on Twitter and other social media platforms are not enough if they are not backed with actions.

Gbenga Sesan says that discussion by citizens had started before social media but has been more noticed due to the advent of these platforms.
