Despite our government’s efforts to frustrate our hustle, we have refused to be intimidated.
They refused to give us electricity, we started generating our own electricity.
They refused to give us electricity, we started generating our own electricity.
They refused to give us water, we gave ourselves water. If we cannot afford our own borehole, then our head and our Jerri can will fetch us the water we need.
They refused to give us shelter, we found ways to provide shelter for ourselves.
Do you know how hard it is?
For people starting out without access to mortgage (loans to enable you own your own home) to find shelter, buy the furniture they need, buy kitchen appliances and accessories.
All on meagre salary?
They refused to give us job, we found ways to survive.
They refused to give us good roads, we travel on them anyway.
They refused to give us security, we found ways to protect ourselves. We even pay people now in our communities, towns and cities to protect us.
They refused to give us good health care, we told them,
Who cares!
When we have leaves, roots, animal skin, even animal shit to make us the most bitter herbs that will chase every unwanted illness in our body packing.
They refused to give us quality and affordable education, yet we have a lot of bright minds that can compete with anybody around the world in whatever industry.
Despite All These, we are;
1. Friendly and Hospitable
It is only in Nigeria that you will hear something like… I was just passing in your area and decided to come in to see how you are doing
You might be in the middle of something Important, or so unkempt because you were not expecting anybody.
Yet we will let them in, offer them drinks and food, and spend quality time with them.
We welcome everyone, even total strangers.
2. Generous
We have built monuments that will last decades and even centuries because of our generosity.
Look around you, the churches, the mosques etc., how did they come to be?
Because we gave.
Look at our streets, filled with beggars, why do you think they keep coming back again and again.
Because they know we will give them again and again. If not, they know that their efforts are futile.
Some could not afford to go to school, then, their kinsmen gathered and paid the fees. Some could not finance a business, their kinsmen gathered to set them up in business.
3. We are Happy
We celebrate anything more than anybody in the world.
We celebrate marriages like something out of this world.
Even if we don’t know what to do, we will come with our empty stomach to make sure you don’t take any food home.
Then give birth to a child and watch as people fill your house with such ecstasy.
Then go to church to dedicate your baby, the whole community will not rest for you that day. Music will be blaring off from the loudest of speakers, people jumping up and down in celebration of your child.
Even on Sundays in our churches, wait till it’s time for thanksgiving and witness pure joy, steaming out from Nigerians
4. We are Creative
Our creativity is not only in the things we see, but in how we manage to survive all that have been going on in our country.
We manage to survive the hardship, unemployment insecurity and every other thing bedeviling us because we are creative.
But look beyond that, you will see how our creative industries have been booming for a very long time now.
Engineering, fashion, movie, writing, developers etc.
We are now gradually showing the world what we can do.
5. Family Values
Do you know the amount of shouting, cursing, swearing, banging on the table that goes on in most families in Nigeria?
Yet, they have managed to remain together.
It is this extreme loyalty to marriages that have made Nigeria remain as one of the lowest country with divorce cases.
Not only that, we have devoted family members that are willing at any time to take up responsibility for any child whose parents died or could not finance their education.
We have enduring family values that makes us tick in whatever conditions we may find our marriage.
6. Hard Workers
To survive it here, you must work hard.
So it has made it almost inevitable for people to work hard whether we like it or not. And so we have become a people of hard workers, making sure we provide for our families whatever their need is
7. We Never Give Up
Lastly, we never give up.
Am not sure of any country that will pass through what we are passing for 56 years, yet every morning its citizens will wake up very motivated and hopeful to make it despite all odds.
Can you imagine us passing all those things listed above yet we are unshakable?
We never say never.
It’s a hallmark of a great people, it’s a sign of a great people.
And a country filled with such amazing people is a great country
Happy Independence Day Nigeria.
