‘I didn’t hug Ooni because we don’t do such in Lagos,’ Monarch says

Oba Akiolu however said that he didn’t hug the Ooni because there is no culture of hugging or holding in Lagos.

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi

The video of Oba Akiolu supposedly snubbing the Ooni attracted controversy with many accusing the Oba of Lagos of insulting a more senior monarch.

“Anybody can imagine anything. There was nothing. The custom or tradition is like that in Lagos. We don’t hold each other; we don’t hug,” the Oba of Lagos told Punch.

Oba Akiolu also dismissed claims that he disrespected the Ooni because he is older than him.

“Which age difference? A monarch is a monarch. There is no age difference,” the Oba of Lagos said.

In the video, the Oba of Lagos was seen raising a seemingly dismissing hand when the Ooni tried to greet him.

The Ooni had previously embraced a monarch who was seated next to Oba Akiolu.
