Minister condemns call for Igbos to leave North

The minister said this while addressing newsmen after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which held at the Presidential Villa.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.

According to him all Igbos leaving in the North are safe and those calling for them to leave will be punished.

A group known as the Coalition of Northern Youths (CNY) earlier issued an ultimatum asking Igbos to leave the North in 90 days.

The ultimatum has sparked a lot of debate in the country, leading to calls for the arrest of members of the group.

Reports say Governor Nasir El-Rufai has ordered for the arrest of the members of the group for issuing the ultimatum.

Speaking further in the issue, Mohammed said that security agencies have been placed on alert and they are handling the issue.

He said while addressing newsmen after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, on Wednesday.

The minister said “It is not the first time that different groups will issue such threats.

“It is not new, but what I want to assure you is that the security agencies are on top of the situation.”

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused a cabal in the presidency of sponsoring the youths who asked Igbos to leave the North in 90 days.
