Durbar means procession of horses. The annual event is celebrated in northern Nigeria during the Ed-el-Fitri occasion. The event which is over 500 years old is celebrated amidst pomp and pageantry.

The event which has become a tourist attraction begins with prayers to Allah for the successful completion of the Ramadan (fasting) period. It is followed by a parade of the Emir and his entourage on horses, accompanied by traditional musicians.

With various local musical instruments such as the Kakaaki, Algaita, Ganga, they make melodic sounds those from the north can relate with.

In Kano, the Emir leads the procession with his beautifully dressed horse. He also received dignitaries who came from all works of life to pay him homage at the palace.

The annual event has opened up the state for tourist activities. It is also an opportunity for the state to showcase its rich cultural heritage and history.

The event was not celebrated elaborately in the last five years due to activities of the Boko Haram terrorist sect. This may have changed with the turn out of people at this year's event.
