'Provide waste control system at beaches' - NGO urges Lagos Government

An environmentalist and co-founder of the Beach Samaritans, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Ms Sola Alamutu, has called on the Lagos State Government to provide a waste control strategy at beaches, to safeguard the public facilities.

She gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday April 1, in Lagos.

Alamutu said that there is need to ensure a healthy and clean beach, noting that beach is a place where the country's tourism sector could be promoted.

According to her, the NGO had planned to clean up beaches in Lagos for the Easter celebration but that the programme was cancelled due to the general elections.

She, however, said that Beach Samaritans would carry out the exercise after the Easter holidays.

“We are hoping that our government will soon get to know the reasons and the benefits of ensuring that our beaches are kept clean.

“We also hope that the local governments too will show interest in the initiative and promote the exercise within the community, especially those located along the beaches,’’ she said.

Alamutu, who is also a representative of Children and the Environment (CATE), another NGO, called for volunteers to support the initiative towards ensuring filth-free beaches.

She also encouraged fun seekers, who are regular visitors at public beaches, to be proactive in ensuring that all wastes generated were evacuated promptly.
